Quick Answer

Instagram analytics (called "Insights") measure how your content performs. The key metrics are: Reach (unique accounts that saw your content), Impressions (total times your content was viewed), Engagement (likes + comments + saves + shares), and Engagement Rate (engagement ÷ reach × 100). Understanding these metrics helps you create better content and grow your account.

Core Metrics

Reach

The number of unique accounts that saw your content at least once. If one person sees your post three times, that counts as 1 reach. Reach tells you how many individual people your content reached.

Impressions

The total number of times your content was viewed. If one person sees your post three times, that counts as 3 impressions. Impressions are always equal to or higher than reach. The ratio of impressions to reach tells you how often people see your content multiple times.

Engagement

The total number of interactions with your content: likes + comments + saves + shares + profile visits. This is the broadest measure of how your audience responded to your content.

Engagement Rate

Your engagement divided by your reach (or followers), expressed as a percentage. The formula:

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) ÷ Reach × 100

A good engagement rate is 1-3% for most accounts. Nano-influencers (under 10K followers) often see 5-8%.

Content Performance Metrics

Likes

The number of times people tapped the heart icon on your post. Likes are the most basic form of engagement but the least meaningful — they require the least effort from the viewer.

Comments

The number of comments left on your post. Comments are a stronger engagement signal than likes because they require more effort. Posts with high comment rates tend to get more algorithmic distribution.

Saves

The number of times people bookmarked your post. Saves are a very strong signal to the algorithm — they indicate your content was valuable enough to return to later. Educational content, tutorials, and reference posts tend to get the most saves.

Shares

The number of times people shared your post to their Story, sent it via DM, or shared it externally. Shares are the strongest algorithmic signal — they indicate your content was valuable enough to recommend to others. Viral content gets high share rates.

Profile Visits

The number of times people visited your profile from a specific post. High profile visits indicate your content made people curious about who you are — a strong sign of brand-building content.

Story Metrics

Story Impressions

Total views of your Story, including repeat views by the same person.

Story Reach

Unique accounts that viewed your Story.

Story Replies

Number of DM replies your Story received.

Story Taps Forward

How many times viewers tapped to skip to the next Story. High forward taps indicate content that didn't hold attention.

Story Taps Back

How many times viewers tapped to re-watch a Story slide. High back taps indicate compelling content.

Story Exits

How many times viewers left your Story entirely. High exits on a specific slide indicate content that lost the audience.

Story Navigation

How many times viewers navigated to your profile from your Story.

Audience Metrics

Followers

Total accounts following you. Growth rate (new followers minus unfollows over time) is more important than the raw number.

Follower Demographics

Breakdown of your audience by age, gender, location, and active hours. Available in Insights for accounts with 100+ followers.

Active Hours

When your followers are most active on Instagram. Use this to determine optimal posting times.

Top Locations

The cities and countries where your followers are based.

Reels Metrics

Plays

Total number of times your Reel started playing. A single viewer watching twice counts as 2 plays.

Accounts Reached

Unique accounts that saw your Reel in their feed, Reels tab, or Explore page.

Likes, Comments, Saves, Shares

Same as post metrics — but for Reels specifically.

Audio Page Views

How many people clicked through to the audio page from your Reel. High numbers indicate your audio choice was popular.

Shopping Metrics

Product Taps

How many times people tapped on a product tag in your post or Story.

How many people clicked through to the product page.

Product Views

How many people viewed the product detail page.
