Troubleshooting

Instagram Not Working?

12 fixes that actually work — from quick 30-second solutions to advanced troubleshooting. Works for iPhone, Android, and the web. Updated for 2026.

Quick Diagnostic

Is it just you? Try Instagram on a different device or browser. If it works elsewhere, the issue is with your device — follow the fixes below.

Is everyone affected? Check status.meta.com. If Instagram is down globally, wait for Meta to fix it.

Is it a specific feature? Stories, Reels, DMs, or the feed can have separate issues. Try the targeted fixes below.

12 Fixes, in Order

1

Check if Instagram is down

Before troubleshooting your device, check if Instagram is experiencing a global outage. Visit status.meta.com or search "Instagram down" on X/Twitter.

2

Switch your internet connection

Toggle between WiFi and mobile data. If on WiFi, try mobile data. If on mobile data, try WiFi. Many loading issues are simply connection problems.

3

Force-close and reopen Instagram

On iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and swipe Instagram away. On Android: open Recent Apps and swipe Instagram away. Then reopen the app.

4

Restart your phone

A simple restart clears temporary memory and resets network connections. This fixes many issues that force-closing alone doesn't resolve.

5

Update Instagram

Go to the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and check for updates. Running an outdated version is one of the most common causes of crashes and errors.

6

Clear Instagram's cache (Android)

Go to Settings → Apps → Instagram → Storage → Clear Cache. This removes temporary files that may be corrupted without deleting your data or login.

7

Offload and reinstall (iPhone)

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Instagram → Offload App. This removes the app but keeps your data. Then reinstall from the App Store.

8

Free up storage space

Instagram needs at least 500MB of free space to function properly. Check your phone's storage and delete unused apps, photos, or videos if you're running low.

9

Check Instagram's permissions

Make sure Instagram has permission to access your camera, photos, microphone, and notifications. Go to Settings → Instagram → Permissions and enable what's needed.

10

Disable VPN or proxy

VPNs and proxies can interfere with Instagram's servers. Temporarily disable any VPN or proxy and try again. If this fixes it, the VPN's server location may be blocked.

11

Update your phone's OS

Outdated operating systems can cause app compatibility issues. Check for system updates: Settings → General → Software Update (iPhone) or Settings → System → System Update (Android).

12

Contact Instagram support

If nothing else works, go to Settings → Help → Report a Problem in the Instagram app. Describe the issue, include screenshots, and submit. Instagram typically responds within 24-72 hours.

Specific Issues

Feed not loading

Usually a connection issue. Switch WiFi/mobile data, force-close the app, and check if Instagram is down. If persistent, clear cache or reinstall.

Stories won't load or upload

Check file size (under 100MB), format (JPG/PNG/MP4), and your connection. Clear cache and try uploading from a different network.

Can't post or comment

You may have an action block. Wait 24-48 hours without posting, liking, or commenting. Check Account Status for any violations.

App keeps crashing

Free up storage (500MB+), update the app and your OS, clear cache, and restart your phone. If it persists, delete and reinstall Instagram.

Can't log in

Reset your password via email/phone. If your account was hacked, go to instagram.com/hacked. Check for 2FA backup codes if enabled.

Reels not playing

Usually a connection or cache issue. Switch networks, clear cache, and update the app. If Reels are down globally, wait for Meta to fix it.
