Quick Answer

Instagram lets you add up to 5 accounts on the mobile app and switch between them without logging out. To add an account: go to your profile → tap your username at the top → Add account → log in or create a new account. To switch: double-tap your profile icon in the bottom-right corner, or long-press it to see all saved accounts.

How to Add a Second (or Third, Fourth, Fifth) Account

On iPhone or Android

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile (tap your picture in the bottom-right).
  2. Tap your username at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Add account.
  4. Enter the credentials for the account you want to add, or tap Create new account to make one.
  5. Complete the login/setup flow.

You can now switch between accounts without logging out.

How to Switch Between Accounts

Method 1: Double-tap

Double-tap your profile icon in the bottom-right corner to instantly switch to the last-used account.

Method 2: Long-press

Long-press your profile icon to see a list of all saved accounts. Tap the one you want to switch to.

Method 3: From Settings

  1. Go to your profile → tap the three-line menu (≡).
  2. Tap the account name at the top of the settings menu.
  3. Tap the account you want to switch to, or Add account to add another.

What's Shared and What's Separate

When you manage multiple accounts on the same device:

FeatureShared or Separate?
Login credentialsSeparate — each account has its own username/password
Posts, stories, ReelsSeparate — each account has its own content
Followers and followingSeparate
DMsSeparate — each account has its own inbox
NotificationsCan be separate — enable per-account push notifications
Saved postsSeparate
DraftsSeparate
Device settings (theme, language)Shared — applies to all accounts on the device
Contacts syncingCan be separate — each account has its own contact sync settings

Managing Notifications for Multiple Accounts

By default, push notifications come from your active account. To get notifications from all accounts:

  1. Go to Settings and activityNotifications.
  2. Enable notifications for the current account.
  3. Switch to each other account and repeat.

Each account's notifications are independent. You'll see notifications from all logged-in accounts regardless of which one is currently active.

Tips for Managing Multiple Accounts

  • Use distinct profile photos — makes it obvious which account you're posting from.
  • Check the active account before posting — accidentally posting from the wrong account is the most common multi-account mistake.
  • Use Instagram's built-in switching — don't log out and back in; the saved account feature is faster and more secure.
  • Keep accounts on one device when possible — Instagram limits the number of devices per account for security.
  • Separate email addresses — each account needs a unique email or phone number.

Common Questions

Is there a limit to how many Instagram accounts I can create?

Instagram doesn't publish an official limit on total account creation, but you can have up to 5 accounts logged in simultaneously on the mobile app. Creating many accounts from the same device or IP may trigger Instagram's spam detection.

Can I use the same email for multiple Instagram accounts?

No. Each Instagram account requires a unique email address or phone number. If you want multiple accounts, you'll need multiple email addresses.

Will Instagram know I have multiple accounts?

Instagram is aware of all accounts linked to your device. Accounts that follow each other or interact frequently may be suggested to the same users. If you want accounts to be completely separate, avoid following each other and use different devices when possible.

Can I have a personal and business account on the same app?

Yes. You can mix personal, creator, and business accounts on the same device. Each account type has its own settings and features. Switch between them using the methods described above.
