Quick Answer

Instagram Notes are short text or image updates (up to 60 characters for text) that appear in the DM inbox above your conversations. To post a Note: tap your profile picture in the DM inbox → type your message or add a photo → tap Share. Notes last 24 hours and are visible to your followers and people you follow.

What Are Instagram Notes?

Notes are Instagram's version of status updates — short, ephemeral messages that appear in the Direct Messages section. They're similar to:

  • WhatsApp Status — short text/photo updates visible for 24 hours.
  • Twitter/X posts — short text, but limited to 60 characters and ephemeral.
  • Facebook Status — quick thoughts shared with your network.

Notes appear as a circular bubble with your profile picture and a preview of your text in the DM inbox, above your conversations.

Step-by-Step: Post a Note

  1. Open Instagram and go to your DM inbox.
  2. Tap your profile picture at the top (it says "Your Note").
  3. Type a short message (up to 60 characters) or tap the camera icon to add a photo.
  4. Choose who can see it: Followers you follow back or Close Friends.
  5. Optionally, add an emoji state — a small emoji that appears next to your profile picture.
  6. Tap Share.

Your Note is now visible for 24 hours in the DM inbox of people who can see it.

Who Can See Your Notes?

You can choose between two audiences:

  • Followers you follow back — mutual followers can see your Note. This is the default.
  • Close Friends — only people on your Close Friends list can see it.

People who don't follow you or who you don't follow back cannot see your Notes.

What Can You Share in a Note?

  • Text — up to 60 characters. Keep it short and punchy.
  • Photos — a single photo with optional text overlay.
  • Emoji states — a small emoji that appears next to your profile picture in the DM inbox (e.g., 🔥, 😴, 🎵, 📚).

How to Reply to a Note

When you see someone's Note in your DM inbox:

  1. Tap on their Note bubble.
  2. Type a reply in the text field.
  3. Tap Send.

The reply opens a regular DM conversation with that person. Notes are a conversation starter — they make it easy to reach out without sending a cold DM.

Common Questions

How long do Instagram Notes last?

Notes last 24 hours, same as Stories. After 24 hours, they disappear automatically.

Can I see who viewed my Note?

No. Instagram does not show who viewed your Note. Unlike Stories, there's no viewer list.

Can I delete my Note before 24 hours?

Yes. Tap your Note bubble → tap the three dots → Delete note. It disappears immediately.

Are Notes the same as Stories?

No. Stories appear in the Stories bar at the top of the feed and can be up to 60 seconds of video or multiple photos. Notes are short text (60 characters) or single photos that appear in the DM inbox. They serve different purposes.

Can I use Notes with a private account?

Yes. Notes work on private accounts. Only your mutual followers (or Close Friends, depending on your setting) can see them.
